Meet Melissa, a devoted mother and fierce advocate for her health. Her journey began in August while on vacation with her family in Aruba. During a routine shower, Melissa felt a pea-sized lump on her left breast. Despite her husband’s reassurance not to jump to conclusions, she trusted her instincts. “I know my body, and I knew something wasn’t right,” she recalls.
Her uncertainty grew as just a week earlier, Melissa had her annual check-up and breast exam, both of which came back clear. Later, she would learn that the lump couldn’t be detected during the typical breast exam lying down—it was only noticeable when upright. It also didn’t appear on the diagnostic mammogram but was finally revealed through an ultrasound.
The results confirmed what she feared: “Your biopsy came back, and you have breast cancer.” Melissa was diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer. Determined to face this battle head-on, she chose to undergo a bilateral mastectomy and participate in a clinical trial to take proactive steps toward her recovery.
Her message to others is clear and empowering:
- Know your body.
- Recognize when something doesn’t feel right.
- Follow up, no matter what—it could save your life.
While Melissa didn’t ask for support, the Fightstrong Foundation stepped in to brighten her journey. We were able to donate a $750 gift card to Eat Clean Bro, gift cards to Louca’s, and a relaxing gift card to Aqua Spa to help her focus on healing and self-care.
Melissa expressed her heartfelt gratitude:
“Thank you SO much to the Fightstrong Foundation for your amazing, thoughtful, and generous gift. Most of all, thank you for your care, support, and everything you do to help me and others stay positive throughout this journey.”
Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy, early detection, and community support. We love you and will continue to pray for you!
