Meet Gail, a strong and resilient woman whose journey with cancer began in July 2019. What seemed like a routine UTI turned into a life-changing diagnosis when she was rushed to the ER with immense pain and heavy bleeding. Doctors discovered a 9 cm mass on her left kidney, and shortly after, she underwent a nephrectomy. Gail and her wife, Dawn, were relieved to hear that everything seemed fine, although there was a small spot on her lung that doctors believed was just scar tissue.
For the next few years, Gail underwent regular CT scans every six months, focusing on her abdomen and lower lungs. In 2022, Gail faced another health scare when she experienced severe symptoms that led her back to the ER. A CT scan revealed a 5mm mass on her right kidney and small nodules on her lungs, marking the start of another difficult chapter. Gail underwent a partial nephrectomy, but she and her doctors knew the lung nodules needed attention too. After consulting a pulmonologist, it was discovered that the spot on her lung had been present since 2019, leading to a referral to a thoracic surgeon.
In July 2024, Gail underwent surgery to remove the tumor and part of her lung. It was then that she received devastating news: her cancer had spread to both lungs, and she was now diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. What had initially been missed in 2019 had progressed. However, her oncologist reassured her that the cancer, though advanced, was not aggressive and recommended immunotherapy to help manage it.
Before starting immunotherapy, Gail faced yet another obstacle. A mass was found on her right buttock muscle, requiring a biopsy and ablation. Scheduled for October 10th, 2024, in NYC, this procedure will determine the next steps in her treatment plan. Once the mass is addressed, Gail will finally be able to start her immunotherapy.
Moved by Gail and Dawn’s incredible resilience, we at the Fightstrong Foundation felt compelled to support them through this difficult time. In addition to the emotional toll, Gail’s treatment has created financial burdens, so we were honored to donate a bulk shopping of groceries and essentials. To help ensure Gail and Dawn could maintain their groceries in the future, we also provided ShopRite gift cards, offering them some peace of mind.
Gail’s journey is a testament to the power of love, strength, and perseverance. As she prepares for her next surgery and begins immunotherapy, we stand beside her, inspired by her unyielding courage. Both she and Dawn continue to show that no matter how tough the battle, they are ready to face it together.
